All machine foot pedals are speed sensitive. Knowing the positions of slowest and fastest parts of the pedal and regulating speed into a slow rhythm, greatly reduces frustration for the new sewer. Some new models of sewing machines have a button that regulates speed.
Confusing settings of machine
Understanding the settings on the sewing machine are as important as the sewing process. The tension on average is set on 4, while the length is generally 3. The width varies from 0 to 6 depending on the stitch type and width required. Needle position stays in the middle unless it needs to be moved to the right or left to facilitate specialized stitching as in sewing a zipper.
Forgetting to lower presser foot before sewing
This common mistake results in bobbin thread creating looping under the fabric. Sometimes the thread breaks to alert sewer that something is wrong.
Missing major thread guides in the threading process
This is when you bypass a key space where thread is supposed to pass, especially the "Take up lever".
Leaving too short a thread tail after ending each stitching line
Not aligning fabric edge properly to the presser foot for straight sewing
Improper insertion of Bobbin into bobbin case
Not moving the needle to the highest position before threading
Not understanding tape and ruler measurements in seam allowances
