My journey
Although I had a keen interest in sewing and would naturally gravitate towards fabrics, pins, needles, thread and apparel design, it wasn't until I was trained in middle school the proper way that my sewing skills were solidified. Home science or home economics as it is known by some sewers, was my formal introduction to sewing. From ages 10-13, I learned foundational skills (mostly hand sewing) as part of the curriculum in my school. We created a scrapbook full of the necessary sample skills for our beginner sewing. Armed with these skills, my confidence level began to rise with each garment I made.
Many sewing lessons are offered on a project completion basis; while this may be a good starting point, it is hardly ideal for the complete novice. You will complete the project, but miss many foundational skills and their functions along the way . For example, you may feel less confident when you have to repeat the process without the teacher's help.
With Youtube videos and many "experts" in the sewing field today, it is very easy to get lost in the sea of unending " how tos and diys." If you are looking for a no-nonsense, straight- forward, step by step skill building, time-saving lesson package, look no further.
